A culinary legend gives a disheartened office worker with a new recipe for life. In Julie & Julia, true anecdotes of Julia Child’s life and her cookbook inspire amateur writer Julie Powell to stir up all the recipes in Child’s cookbook, 524 recipes, in 365 days. Powell motivates herself by documenting her progress and daily cooking experiences on a blog for each of the recipes. 

Julia Powell lives her life with a miserable job answering calls from victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2002. To do something she takes pleasure in, Julie aims to cook every single recipe in Julia Child’s cookbook, “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” and keeps a blog to record her progress and motivate her.

At some point, Julia Powell’s blog garners recognition and is featured in The New York Times, leading to interest from publishers, agents, journalists, and Julia Child herself. Like Powell, Child’s cookbook was originally rejected by Houghton Mifflin, but is finally published by Alfred A. Knopf.

In the last scene of the movie, Powell and her husband are seen in Child’s kitchen, located in the Smithsonian Institution. Child is also seen in the same kitchen, but years earlier, opening the first copy of her cookbook and celebrating her achievement with her husband.
