Did you know that certain foods make you feel happy? In elementary school, whenever I was able to eat a piece of chocolate cake as part of my lunch, the thought of just seeing a slice of the chocolate frosted cake brightened my day. I wondered why that happened. I discovered that certain foods, such as chocolate or cocoa, releases dopamine, a chemical that allows us to perceive pleasure.
As I read an article about how food can boost or lower a person’s mood, I wondered if there was a way that we could simply change our moods to a more positive, happy attitude throughout the day by changing the types of things we eat. Could we somehow develop a successful diet plan that suits the different moods we feel throughout the day? For example, if I am feeling depressed, is there some type of combination of different foods that I can eat to make me feel joyfulness? I think that this plan is achievable. If this plan works, medication might not be the only solution to major depression or bipolar disorder. It can be an even better solution than medication because it would not make the person feel numbness, a side effect of antidepressants.
A simple change in our diet can radically improve our mood, whether it be a happy or sad mood. That is a very incredible feat for such a simple thing like food.
