“Eat It”

Eat It 45 cover

“Just eat it, eat it, eat it, eat it.”

Remember when your mother would say this phrase to you when you played around with your food? I surely do. It reminds me of when I was a little kid and my mother made me eat everything that she put on my dinner plate because I was a “growing girl.” I was also a slow eater that liked to play with my food. When I was younger, it would take me at least an hour to finish my dinner, which made my dad mad because he would have to wait until I finished my food so he could wash the dishes. “Eat It” by Weird Al Yankovic tells a story that is shared with all children around the world. Hearing parents constantly tell you to eat your food because there are many other unfortunate children in the world who cannot afford to buy a meal and just to eat the food that you are given even if you aren’t hungry and do not want to eat at that moment. Now, I understand why parents are so strict on making their children eat everything. They do it so you can grow up into a person that isn’t afraid to try new, different things rather than be a picky eater that won’t try anything. Eat the exotic fruits and try everything that you think would taste good, you might find some type of food that you love. As Weird Al says, don’t be “such a fussy young man.”

  1. I totally relate to how your parents would guilt trip you into eating. I got that talk almost everyday when I was little. I never really realized why and your explanation makes total sense. I’ll take your advice for when I go out with friends to try out new foods. Thanks!
